Husky trekking week in Kuhmo, Finland

Destination: Kuhmo

6 days excluding flights

A week to spend at a husky farm with guided husky trekking tours. For bigger groups possible to organise with hotel accommodation. On huskytrekking tours every hiker will get an “own” husky, a local guide to show the way through the forests. Hikers will be provided with special huskytrekking gear; a shockabsorbing leash between the hiker and the dog and a comfortable belt on hikers waist. Accommodation is at the husky farm or if wished in a lake side hotel – a perfect combination of wilderness & wellness, hiking & huskies, outdoor life & relaxation. The husky farm is a home of 25 dogs; mostly Siberian and Alaskan Huskies that are bred for pulling, but there are also some mix breed rescue dogs that are having a new life within the pack. Huskies live at the kennel in the yard of an old log cabin. The place used to be a base camp for forestry workers but is nowadays a home for huskies and their owner, and a base camp for husky sledding and wilderness tours. It is situated between two wilderness lakes, neigbours being about two kilometres away: a paradise for natureand dog lover! Hiking with huskies is more intensive than normal hill walking as the dogs are very eager to study the surroundings. Mostly they follow the trail but sometimes they also like to study what can be found deeper in the forests! As the dogs have way better senses than us, they also help us to see and hear better what is happening in the nature.

Day 1
Arrival at Kajaani airport. Transfer to the husky farm or Hotel Kalevala in Kuhmo (1 ½) hours. Dinner.

Day 2
First husky trekking tour. After 40 minute transfer we are ready to start the tour. Our hiking route is called the Blue Path, named after spectacular views it has to offer. The
path follows a narrow, pine-growing esker surrounded by many lakes. Lunch will be enjoyed by the open fire (or in case of forest fire warning it will be prepared with a cooking stove). Total distance covered during the day will be approximately 12 kilometres. After the tour transfer back to the husky farm for evening sauna and dinner.

Day 3
On the second husky trekking day we will head to the Teeri-Lososuo mire reserve.12km trail leads us through old growth forest islets and vast mires. If you wish you can try
trekking with another husky today. However it might be that you have bonded with your dog from the day before and want to trek with the same dog every day (this is allowed, for sure!).

Day 4
Last trekking day on Iso-Palonen–Maariansärkät-nature protection area. There are several route options to choose, from 5 to nearly 20 kilometres. Lunch will be enjoyed at
one of the many fire places along the trails. All the fireplaces are by the lake so it is also possible to dip into a lake for the refreshment!

Day 5
After three days of hiking with huskies we will spend a day at the husky farm. There are plenty of tasks to do, like grooming the huskies and fishing for them with a fyke
net (their diet consist mainly of lake fish during the summer time). We can also take some huskies for a walk who did not join us during the other days.
