Mendoza is an expanding and very pleasant city. Rainfall is slight, but irrigation has turned the area into an oasis of fruit trees and vineyards. It is really fascinating to find a green city like Mendoza in a kind of desert. The inhabitants really love their town. On each side (also on the smallest ones) they planted trees, to have shadow during the very hot summer. So, from the Hill of Glory you can see how green this town is. It’s also very clean. The inhabitants are really looking very good after their capital. In 1861 it was completely destroyed by an earthquake, there are no vestiges of colonial architecture left other than the ruins of the Church of San Francisco. The climate is mild and dry, and the sky is rarely clouded. Mendoza is probably the loveliest town of all Argentine large cities. Worthwhile to visit it!

During the half day city tour you will visit the city sharing the culture and history of its foundation by the Spanish colonizers four centuries ago. It includes a visit to the Plaza Independencia, the main avenues and the Civic Centre, the Founding Area, the Aquarium (as optional), the General San Martín Park and the Hill of Glory, a popular spot for a panoramic view.

Also important are the historical Pedro del Castillo Square and the Museum of “Area Fundacional”, the oldest part of the city, while the sensual “Alameda” (Popular Avenue) brings to mind an image of General San Martín strolling down the streets.

The focal point of life for the Mendozinos is the San Martin Avenue, a splendid mix of commerce, beauty, order and tidiness.

Day 02                                                                                                                   Mendoza

Optionally you can book a Bodega-Tour - this is a tour of the land tamed by man, and it includes fine wine tasting (2 bodegas - one very big one, all automatically - one very small, all self-made) and the opportunity to observe how the wines are made. Mendoza produces 70% of the country’s production.

Up until the end of last century, the vineyards were a home industry, but over the past decades have replaced cattle and olives until they have become the most important economic activity of the region, together with petrol. However, the climate and geography of the region gave rise to methods and results that are particular to the area. For example, the Cuyo wines do not greatly depend on rain but are irrigated instead with water form glacial run-off. For this reason, local wines do not differ so much from year to year and that is why sometimes not even the best bottles have the vintage year marked. Wine makers also tend to mix grapes from different vineyards so it is not possible to tell apart wines of San Rafael from those of Maipu for instance.
